Autoharps have two tuning pegs, which are typically labeled C and G. The C on the peg for the lower string is usually blue and the G is usually black. On the right side, next to the peg, is a pointer, which shows the note that will be played when the string is plucked, and which is often labeled with a corresponding letter of the diatonic scale.
Autoharps are typically tuned to the diatonic scale (using a system of major and minor thirds). The lowest string is tuned to the lowest open string; the next highest string is tuned to the second lowest open string, and so on.
Standard autoharps have a range of about one octave. They are also available with additional range, varying from a full chromatic range to a doubled diatonic range, such as a 5-string autoharp that has a range of 9 octaves (5 octaves of each key). These strings are tuned in similar ways as standard autoharps, but the string spacing is doubled, so the octave is divided into half the number of strings. Existing models use these new strings by adjusting the distance between the basic strings and the tuning pins, usually moving them to the left, but they can also be made to fit with the strings already on the instrument.
For a harp to be classed as a diatonically-strung harp, the strings must be tuned to one of the diatonic sets. Many people incorrectly regard these different harps as being different instruments, but they are not. The distinction between these instruments is purely one of tuning, not construction or their sound. The diatonic harp is an instrument composed of two or three strings which are tuned to the diatonic scale. A three-key harp would have two strings tuned to the major scale and one to the minor scale. A two-key harp would have two strings which are in the same key but are one octave apart. These two strings are meant to be in tune with each other. In this case, the two strings would be tuned to the diatonic scales of the major and minor keys. The two-key GDA is usually tuned to the C major and A minor keys.
Some applications, such as Java, require that the application directories and libraries are updated to a newer version before the user can update. However, there are some applications that are not explicitly API-specific, such as the X Window System, the X server source code, are automatically updated as required.
