The character's name first came to Child in a supermarket when an old lady, noting the span of Child's arms, asked for his help in reaching out to a can of pears. On seeing this, Child's wife commented that if his writing career did not work out he could \"always get a job as a reacher in a supermarket\".[5] Reacher's ex-military background was a specific and tactical choice on his behalf. Child has explained, \"I thought that I would do a book that's not the same as everybody else's. Everybody else had their guy working: a private eye in Boston or a police lieutenant in L.A., or wherever. I thought, 'Well, he won't be working, and he won't live anywhere, and let's just take it from there.'\" Child also felt that this origin would lend itself to the character's personality and nomadic lifestyle: \"This idea of the rootless alienation has got to come from somewhere, and I noticed that the most alienated people are always ex-military, because it's like going from one solar system to the other, it's so different. So that was an easy choice: Make him ex-military. Then make him ex-military police because, broadly speaking, these would be crime novels, and he had to have some investigative experience, and he had to understand procedures and forensics and so on. So that part was all set in stone\".[6]
I have all of the Jack reacher books except the 2020 and 2021 publications. Most I have read twice. I love this series and the reacher character. I highly recommend them to readers who enjoy a good mystery, little or a lot sometimes of sex thrown in.
old-school 1940s pulp made with the tightest visual and narrative economy you'll ever see in a 2010s hollywood production. cruise was born to be mcquarrie's muse, his mammoth charisma funneled into a blunt proficiency that anchors the frame like a brick house. as much as i dearly love their mission: impossible partnership, there's a lot to be said for jack reacher's no-nonsense plotting and coherence. something with the large canvas of mission can't be this lean or tight by definition; one hopes cruise & mcquarrie will return to making a handful more of these in the decade to come.
after seeing this five times over, i'm really convinced that it's one of the best-directed films of the last decade; mcquarrie's like the reincarnation of don siegel, he never says something in the story before he first shows you it, shows you the how, then tells you the why. there's not a bad sequence here, everything's tight, vigorous; i've checked out a jack reacher book & it was written at an 8th grade reading level, nothing of note, but this this is no-frills entertainment at its purest; the car chase here is one of the top 5 car chases ever, maybe top 3. it just rips!
Well I am I suppose a Reacher addict, I now have all his books and both movies, the movie were the catalyst in getting into the series. They selected the wrong person to portray Reacher considering Tom Cruise is 5 foot and Reacher is 6foot 6six behemoth. However the selection was made due to box office appeal and big dollars were made including sucking me into the series well done. This I believe puts Lee Childs into the multiple series club with Cussler, Dale Brown, Mathew Rielly, and other such authors, What would be a good thing is to have at least 2 or even three books a year as us reacher junkies are always sweating out on the release of the next book Keep up the great work and more books
I am waiting for the Next one and I cannot understand why when at the start of the early books they list jack reacher as being six foot six and 250 pounds then get a short house like tom cruise to play him in film
have read all of the reacher series.have enjoyed them all but the last thre have not contained the intense story lines of previous books. in my opinion i would let reacher gently settle down as he is now reaching that age 59ce067264
