Some webcams are "plug and play" models which are automatically recognized by your computer and don't require the use of a driver. Other models need a driver to be installed first before you are able to use the webcam. Unfortunately, webcam drivers are sometimes easy to misplace. While manufacturers often offer downloadable drivers on their support websites, you'll need to know the type of webcam you have before you're able to correctly download the right driver.
Locate the box and packaging that came with your webcam. The packaging will offer a few clues concerning the manufacturer and the model of webcam you own, both which are necessary for locating and downloading the proper driver.
Check the webcam hardware if you cannot locate the proper packaging. Look for a manufacturer name and a model number, which might have a series of letters or numbers to denote the type of webcam you own. You can then visit the manufacturer's website and run a search on the model number to find applicable drivers.
Check the manufacturer's website and look through the webcams. Try and locate the one that looks like yours if your webcam isn't stamped with the model name. By finding a picture or product description of your webcam on the manufacturer website, you'll know which model you own and which driver you should download.
Plug your webcam into your computer as though you were setting it up. Click the "Start" or Windows logo button, then click "Control Panel." From the control panel, find and select "System and Maintenance," and then "Device Manager." Locate your webcam among the devices on your computer. Since it doesn't have a driver, the webcam will have a small yellow question mark next to a series of numbers, which is the webcam model.
Enter the webcam model number into the tech support and service section of the manufacturer's website. Some manufacturers have entire websites dedicated to finding the proper driver. Locate the driver for your model number, then download.
